For 2005, the average annual income for all Americans was around $38,000.
As of January 2005, members of Congress received $162,100 per year.
Certain positions have higher rates of pay.
The majority and minority leaders in both the House and Senate and the president pro tempore of the Senate earn $180,100.
The Speaker of the House earns $208,000.
Maybe we as voters should push for the following: all members of Congress shall receive an annual salary equal to the average annual income for all Americans (currently $38,000 per year).
This would include the majority leader and the minority leader in both the House and Senate.
It would also include president pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House.
The President of the United States shall receive an annual salary equal to twice the average annual income for all Americans.
Let's create a performance based salary structure for our congressional leaders.
If the average annual income for all Americans increases, then members of Congress would get a pay raise.
If the average annual income for all Americans decreases, then members of Congress would suffer a pay cut.
It's only fair.
