Letter to the Editor

'Refund Social Security taxes'

William A. Alexander of Harmony Township wrote a great letter to the editor ("Form letter faulted," Sunday) concerning Social Security.

In response to his letter, I would like to add the following.

During the 2000 presidential elections, George W. Bush made his argument for federal income tax cuts. Over and over again, Bush told the American people that he wanted to return to Americans what was rightfully theirs in the form of a tax cut.

During the 2004 presidential elections, Bush made his argument for making the tax cuts permanent.

Supposedly, Social Security is a pay-as-you-go system. Since the 1980s, the federal government has been collecting more in Social Security taxes than it has been paying out. It will continue to do so until the year 2016.

In a statement before the Republican National Committee, Bush stated that there was no Social Security lock box. Bush stated that he and the rest of our elected officials are spending the excess Social Security tax dollars.

Bush actually told the RNC members not to look for the money because it is gone.

If Americans have been paying more in Social Security taxes than what is needed, then why hasn't the federal government either increased Social Security benefits for present-day retirees or refunded that amount of Social Security taxes that we have been overpaying?

Bush has said a lot about what he wants to see happen whenever Social Security expenses exceed Social Security tax revenues.

However, Bush has said nothing about returning to the people what is rightfully ours, a Social Security tax refund.
