Letter to the Editor

Walk the walk

The Ephrata Review, Opinions, Letters to the Editor, 30 August 2006, page A5

Editor, Ephrata Review,

In July, President George W. Bush authorized the activation of as many as 2,500 from the military ready reserve. On August 22, as a result of the decline in Marine reservists volunteering for active duty, the Marine Corps took the unusual step of calling up 1,200 individual ready reservists (inactive reservists) for an additional 12- to 18-month tour of duty. Some military units have already done multiple tours of duty.

Over 59 million Americans voted for Bush during the 2004 presidential election. If just 10% of those individuals who voted for Bush would just volunteer for the military branch of service of their choice, the U.S. armed forces would no longer be overstrained and undermanned. Republicans alone would be able to supply an additional 5.9 million men and women to the fight against terrorism and to help spread capitalism and democracy around the world.

If you are a Republican and voted for Bush, then you have an obligation to not only talk the talk, but also to walk the walk. Republicans need to join the military service of their choice and immediately volunteer for service in Iraq. It's the Republican way.

The next time you see a Bush 2004 bumper sticker on a car, truck, or SUV, give the driver a thumbs-up. A thumbs-up should be a reminder to that driver that all Republicans need to support our troops in combat. It should be a reminder to that driver that they too should encourage someone in their family to join in the fight to spread democracy and capitalism around the world.

This potential Republican military volunteer could be your favorite coach, teacher/professor, son/daughter graduating from high school/college/university, or the person seated next to you in church.

Don't let our military men down; please join today.

Letter to the Editor - Republicans are patriots, too

09/05/2006

In his letter to the editor on Tuesday, Nikola Drobac stated that Republicans should be willing to serve in the military, as if no Republican ever has.

I take offense to that as I am a proud veteran of the Navy who would gladly go back today if called upon to defend our country. We have seen for a fact that most of the members of our volunteer forces are Republicans.

I am tired of people easily characterizing the Republican Party as a bunch of war hawks. We just seem to have a better memory than many of our Democratic counterparts, who seem to forget that we have not yet been attacked again on our soil since Sept. 11, 2001.

That tells me that somebody is doing their job, not just sniping about how the Republicans are not doing their job. I am thankful that we are under good leadership and would urge people to heed the Biblical admonition to pray for our leaders, rather than finding fault.
